Bug Description

Summary says pretty much all of it. Radeon x700 display adapter (laptop built-in) doesn't work in Xorg. Gnome fails to start.

"$sudo apt-get Install xorg-driver-fglrx" and changing the driver from "ati" to "fglrx" in xorg.conf and restarting gdm fixes this problem, but installation and Live fails because of this issue.

The problem has been the same in Breezy 5.10, Dapper F4 and Dapper Beta.

In Dapper Beta Live the 'normal' boot fails with error message complaining that GDM couldn't be started (same happens with install CD) and 'safe video' in Live boots to X, but screen is left just blank...

Blank screen is probably same issue as the one reported in bug 29357.
GDM failure is probably different problem.
