Bug Description

Put in the same folder an AVI file and its corresponding IDX and SUB files (those files contain subtitles).
Right-click the AVI file and start mplayer.
You get an error message saying "cannot load subtitles", but the subtitles are actually loaded and visible onscreen.

This behaviour is also occuring on my system. It happens, because there is also a subtitle format which uses just .sub, without .idx. So mplayer tries to load just the .sub, which doesn't work and so results in an error.

The current package in karmic should enable fontconfig by default, which, indirectly, avoids the error dialog.

can somebody confirm this?

I too have the same issue in Ubuntu Karmic. I get an dialog 'error loading subtitle' but video play with subtitle.

Installed gnome mplayer via software centre. Totem crashes opening the same file.

not sure if it had to do with .sub or .idx file
