Bug Description

whilst installing ubuntu 6.06 beta (april 20th version) my monitor goes on and off randomly. once installed the max resolution is set at 1024x768 even though it supports 1280x1024. when I reconfigure x (after updating system)and then restart x, the monitor issues a message stating 'video mode not supported.' this problem is not unique to ubuntu.

The resolution limit also happens with a Hyundai L70A and Edgy, no other image problems though.

Thanks for the bug report.

Does this still occur in Dapper or Edgy? What other distros have this problem too, and do they have bug reports on this issue?

I can confirm this bug, a show-stopper for those affected.

I have a Hyundai ImageQuest L70A TFT. Native resolution is 1280x1024.

In Dapper, the nv driver works (both with a Geforce4200Ti at first, then upgraded to a Geforce6600GT), but the nvidia 3D driver doesn't. You get a 1024x768 resolution. I tried hard to solve it with help in the forums, deactivating ESID and such, but nothing worked. One can live without 3D acceleration though.

I did a clean install of Edgy with xorg 7.1, and it got worse. Limited to 1024x768 even using default nv driver (and already when booting from the live CD). Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-org didn't help in Dapper, and in Edgy it shows a completely screwed layout.

I'm looking at the nvidia solution with modelines. But the exact VxH sync specs of my old L70A are hard to come by.

I'll post if I find a solution. I just want to say that the nv driver should always work, so this is a show stopper for me.

Personally, I've had more problems with the nv driver than nvidia. My second monitor doesn't work well at all with nv, but does perfectly with nvidia.

Could you try using vesa instead of nv? If the monitor works fine, then we know that it's a bug in the nv driver. Thanks

Same problem here. No matter what resolution list I place in my xorg.conf, the resolution maxes out at 1024x768.

Andrew: the nv diver works perfectly on edgy and feisty. Resolutions all the way up to 1280x1024. The problem is with the binary nvidia drivers AND DVI output with the L70A TFT monitor. Using analog VGA output works. Apparently somewhere a year and a half ago nvidia altered their EDIC algorithms and it stopped working.

I have found a workaround at the German forums: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/63875/
Sadly the solution is for Edgy, and in feisty it doesn't work... again.

This is not a ubuntu-specific issue (maybe a debian issue though), but we could maybe arrive at a solution somehow.

Does this still occur on Gutsy? If so, could you attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and the output from `sudo ddcprobe`?

I'm still on Feisty so I can't tell.

But I finally got it working on Feisty.

xorg.conf attached. The installed drivers are nvidia-glx-new 1.0.9755+2.6.20.5-16.29

Can someone confirm that this xorg.conf works? it doesn't have any EDIC, ESID hacks at all.
