Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After waking up from suspend the display brightness is completely dimmed. The screen is (almost) black. Using the brightness keys the display brightness can be restored to normal values.

This bug is reproducible and occurs every time the computer is woken up.

By the way:
Once the computer came up after suspend without asking for my password. Unfortunately, I could reproduce that behavior so far.

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10alpha4 and a GM965 without compiz. The problems described here came up after the upgrade to 9.10alpha4.

Hi,
I had a similar problem after an upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04 (update 2.6.28.15-generic).
My laptop is an AMILO Si 2636-7002, with same graphical controler as described above.
After complete reboot I discover also that Fn F8 and Fn F9 don't work anymore. With the 8.10 release all was absolutely perfect. I can precise that the applet is not working also.
The only way I found to recover the full brightness is to boot to the Vista partition (that I keep for this kind of problem...) and then restart with Ubuntu.
Unfortunately this little problem has a huge productive impact as the laptop is useless with a dark screen ;)
Thanks for your help,
Philippe

FYI : I made several test with an other flavor of ubuntu: crunchbang 9.04.1. This release is based on jaunty, with openbox interface. The brightness control works...and the volume control doesn't anymore ! Suspend mode is ok.
Maybee an xorg problem then. I will try openbox or xfce or something else rather than gnome on Ubuntu Jaunty. I will inform if I found something more substantial.
Amazing to see how this bug on a little functionality (brightness) can transform your laptop into a useless brick :)
Hope these infos can help...

update : xfce is worst : no brightness, no volume control.

Hmmm... weird... I just found out that correct display brightness is restored on resume if the laptop is NOT CONNECTED to the AC power. So the problem does not occur when resuming on battery power.

@Philippe:
Can you confirm this behaviour with our own system?

I have no idea about the detailed technical background, so I'm just guessing:
Is there some kind of trigger/event/interrupt from ACPI missing/ignored when resuming on AC power? Some trigger like "Hey, adjust your display brightness!!".
During normal operation such an event seems to be fired when disconnecting AC power, since the display is slightly dimmed. Maybe it's exactly this function "detect transition from AC to battery ==> set brightness" that runs at the very moment the laptop wakes up with AC power disconnected. That would explain why the brightness is restored in that special case.

This is just my own theory... since I'm not burdened with any technical expertise chances are high that it's complete bullsh*t... ;-)

Best regards,
Volker

Hi Volker,
I tried different manner but none of them reproduce your behaviour.
Thanks for the tips and tricks anyway :)
I didn't give up with my tests as I really like this little Amilo
machine and use it everyday to code web site. So I ended up with a Lenny
Debian 5 installation to go back to the roots and see what happen. Good
news: as you may guess, all is working perfectly !
I hope this feedback will help to diff somewhere the differences between
Debian Lenny and Jaunty. My kernel is 2.6.26-2.
Or, if someone can tell me where to look at I will be more than happy to
help.
Philippe
