Toolbar display should be "Icons and text" for consistency

Bug Description

The default Firefox setup only shows icons in the main toolbar while all other GNOME applications (Nautilus, Evolution, GEdit) show icons and text by default. For consistency and integration it would be better to enable "Text and icons" by default so that Firefox doesn't look out of place.

Steps to reproduce are simply starting Firefox and some other GNOME application and observing a difference in the toolbar layout.

Thanks for your bug report. I think the firefox buttons only have icons as a design decision. The logic is that it helps to maximise the amount of a webpage that can be displayed and reduce the clutter of toolbars, button labels and such. Personally I prefer the buttons to be without text and just have descriptive icons on them but I'm not sure whether the consistency between firefox and gnome applications is actually a formal usability issue or not.

It is indeed an issue, there is an option to change this in the Customize menu. I am going to add this to the Mozilla Team Meeting Agenda and we will make a decision in time for Feisty hopefully.

Thanks, Alex.

But what about the rest of Firefox? Why do the buttons in Firefox not match your Gnome or KDE theme?

In OS X or XP, the buttons in your browser correlate to theme you have chosen... see my ubuntuforums thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=418424

Not only should the toolbar match the rest of Ubuntu, but shouldn't the buttons as well? I don't mind the squared buttons at all, but some new users might find them quite plain and boring. How easy would implementing Gnome or KDE buttons into Firefox be?

I've been given links to install different themes or widgets/installers to fix this, but that's a hack and I think it should be implemented at the binary level.

Hello Frank,

We just discussed this issue at the meeting, we felt that adding virtually another toolbar to the UI wasn't really practical for smaller monitors.. 15" and below.. It is easily possible to change this by using the Customise menu.. We will probably review this in the nearish future anyway as hardware continues to adopt.. Thus I am closing this report..

Thanks, Alex.
