Bug Description

I have a user on my jaunty UEC system who sees the public IP of his instances right after they start, but some time later ec2-describe-instances shows the private IP in place of the public one.
As the admin user I see the same for his instances, but I have never observed this for any of my own.

INSTANCE i-41CB070F emi-BC3A13E9 172.16.1.34 172.16.1.34 running cuec 0 c1.medium 2009-09-02T16:49:46+0000 eki-075F14CB eri-A30316F2

(the public IP should be 10.55.55.201)

Chris,

Do you have a way to trigger this bug? I am interested in reproducing it for my own edification.

Etienne: I've subscribed Thomas Herve who reported the issue to me. I'm not sure how he's spawning the instance, but I've not seen this in any of my testing with ec2-api-tools 30349 as either the admin user or my personal user.

Thomas: perhaps you could add some detail about anything in particular you're doing that might explain this?

Sure thing.

I'm using ec2-api-tools 1.3-30349 as well.

List of commands and output:

$ ec2-run-instances -k cuec -n 1 -t c1.medium emi-BC3A13E9
RESERVATION r-480E0862 therve therve-default
INSTANCE i-3D32074E emi-BC3A13E9 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 pending cuec 0 c1.medium 2009-09-03T08:58:48+0000 eki-075F14CB eri-A30316F2

$ec2-describe-instances
RESERVATION r-480E0862 therve default
INSTANCE i-3D32074E emi-BC3A13E9 10.55.55.201 172.16.1.34 pending cuec 0 c1.medium 2009-09-03T08:58:48+0000 eki-075F14CB eri-A30316F2

This is correct for now, showing the 2 IPs.

Then I run it a couple of times, waiting a little bit after each call. On the third attempt, I triggered the problem:

$ ec2-describe-instances
RESERVATION r-480E0862 therve default
INSTANCE i-3D32074E emi-BC3A13E9 172.16.1.34 172.16.1.34 running cuec 0 c1.medium 2009-09-03T08:58:48+0000 eki-075F14CB eri-A30316F2

$ date
Thu Sep 3 11:02:49 CEST 2009

Once it's in this state, it never shows the public IP again.

Chris, Thomas-

Which set of tools are you using? euca2ools or ec2-api-tools?

Could you try both, and report if both sets exhibit the issue? I'm going to mark this bug as affecting ec2-api-tools as well, though it might be Invalid.

Marking confirmed in Jaunty, incomplete in Karmic. As soon as we get a Karmic UEC going, I'd like to see this bug's status updated to indicate if it's reproducible there.

I didn't encounter that in my karmic UEC.
I will test some more and confirm/invalidate on karmic.

Never reproduced that with my numerous recent karmic eucalyptus installs.
I'd tend to consider it fixed in karmic. Please reopen if you can reproduce with a karmic UEC.
