quite the same problem for me...
same pc (toshiba satellite m-70)
kernel 2.6.15-19-386 works, (-20 maybe also),
with the following kernels,
including the new 2.6.15-23-686/386,
i got error messages similar to these.
but not on boot: gnome starts, but freezes immediately when i try to open a menu. i can change to another console [ctrl+alt F2/3 etc] but when i try to login again, i get those error-messages above mentioned. a hardboot is then the only possibility.

I would like to add several info as I have allmost same problems:

My hardware:
Notebook HP PAvilion Dv 5000 series
- AMD Turion 64 bit processor
- ATI X200 graphichal card

Using Dapper 6.06 beta und several daily builds (from 10th to 20th of May) all result in same problem.

After booting (install and live CD for AMD64 platforms), the system hangs on line:
<0> Kernel panic - not syncing: Attemped to kill init!

I tried severel other boot options (vga=771, noapic nolapic, expert and server mode, all results in same crash)

- My memory (RAM) in ok, it has been checked several times
- Notebook is brand new

What might be interesting is:
- when trying to install other distribution, i got next results:
- Gentoo (AMD 64) gives me same probles (kernel panic at startuap. also tries several options)
- Debian (AMD 64) netinstall daily build worked for me. It is using kernel 2.6.15-1-amd64-generic and 2.6.16-1-amd64-generic and it works.
- Knoppix (live CD) worked ( based on Debian build)
- Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy (AMD 64) - installation went well and trough, but graphical interface didn't work. Even the text console (ctrl+alt+F1,F2...) It gave fuzzy screen.

I read some similar bug reports and forum post but didnt find solution on this issues. But I admit it is a tricky connection (AMD 64, ATI and Linux)

I also have a Toshiba Satellite M20 with the same problem. The Live CD works fine, but an installed system panics while "Mounting Root Filesystem" with IIRC the same error as Carmelo reports. Rarely, it doesn't panic at that step, but invariably panics while logging in. If I manage to get to recovery mode, it usually panics in short order. This behavior seems like Bug #45636.

This laptop has a SATA hard drive, which is probably the source of errors, since the live CD works fine. Strangely enough, mounting filesystems on the hard drive from the Live CD works, though I have not thoroughly tested this. This problem seems to manifest itself only when the root partition is being mounted from initramfs.

The problem went away when I installed the 2.6.15-20 i386 kernel from the Dapper Beta CD. The problem is present in the final Dapper -23 kernel and the updated -25 kernel. However, the laptop sleep mode doesn't work in the older kernel, while it does work on the newer kernels (tested from the Live CD).

This bug may be fixed in the current edgy developement system. In an effort to track this bug to our latest distribution, it is being targeted for edgy.

Please confirm whether this bug exists in edgy. If not, then please re-attach all related output (e.g. dmesg, oops output) while under edgy.

Latest Edgy CD's can be downloaded from:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/edgy/knot-1/

If this image does not boot from you, you can also download a current daily build from:

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

Note that it may only be necessary to boot the LiveCD to see if your bug is fixed. In this case, you do not need to upgrade your installed system at all to confirm it. Certain bugs may require that you do an actual installation.

I'm marking this as a duplicate of bug #45636 rather than vice versa because that bug contains more info and a workaround (https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/45636/comments/10)
