After the update earlier today my 64bit Kubuntu system had the same problem. During the update 29 packages got removed I'm guessing that some of these packages where crucial to KDE.

I have two 64bit kubuntu systems that seem to be experiencing this. One has nvidia the other has intel. This does not seem to be related to the nvidia video.

I had to use tasksel to install gnome to work around this.

Since my bug [436033] was marked as a duplicate of this one, I'll give my quick synopsis:

The issue appears to be:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  kdebase-workspace-bin: Depends: kdebase-workspace-data (= 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu7) but 4:4.3.1-0ubuntu5 is to be installed

kdebase-workspace-data source is available as 4.3.1-0ubuntu7, but the latest compiled package available on the repositories appears to be 4.3.1-0ubuntu5.

If this package were upgraded on the repos, the following command should fix the problem:

 sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop k3b kpackagekit plasma-widget-networkmanagement kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-data

Seems to have appeared in the repositories. KDE is now reinstalling given the command above.

just for the record, the same can be achieved by running:

sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

KDE is now working again for me.

KDE working again after the latest update. I did how ever need to reinstall KDM.

sudo aptitude reinstall install kdm
 sudo depmod -a
 dpkg-reconfigure kdm, choose kdm

After this I'm back in KDE.
