Looks like you've removed your /etc/samba/smb.conf

  Setting up samba-common (2:3.3.2-1ubuntu3.1) ...
Not replacing deleted config file /etc/samba/smb.conf
Install/upgrade will fail. To recover, please try:
    sudo cp /usr/share/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.conf
    sudo dpkg --configure -a

Follow the instructions to recover.

Changed in samba (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid

not intentionally., didn't have a problem till that update. conf should
have been there before updating, though cant confirm that. No real
reason why it should have been deleted.
