src/atiprobe.c appears to consist mainly of cheap crack that roughly resembles C. The probing is obviously going horribly wrong - mac64 seems to be the fallback, for no obvious reason.

Can you try with

Driver "radeon"

rather than ati or fglrx?

With Driver "radeon" it starts up well, but I can only see a blank (black) screen. Log attached.

As I mentioned above, I get a blank screen. I can see nothing. The GNOME session started up well (I see the different running processes in the console with ps), but I can't use it.

Ah, sorry - your comment didn't show up earlier for some reason. I'll look into this further.

Blank screen issue was reported by many users with ATI x700 card - see bug 22985 (and it's duplicates).

Try adding the following line to your xorg.conf (Monitor section):

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,Auto"

If this helps, then this is probablty duplicate of that bug.

Changed in xserver-xorg-driver-ati:
status: Unconfirmed → Needs Info

Same laptop here, and same problem. Ubuntu (5.10, flights 2, 4, 6 and beta 1-2) has never booted clean because of the driver problem, and neither did any other linux live cd I tried except knoppix4 and that has wrong screen resolution.

fglrx works perfectly out of the box with all other xorg.conf correct, haven't tried radeon driver yet.
