Bug Description

AOpen XC cube EZ482, integrated graphics card ATI Radeon X300 (identified by OpenSUSE as "Radeon XPRESS 200 5974 (PCIE)"). Trying out Ubuntu 6.06 beta 2 for i386. Also tried KUbuntu 6.06 beta 2 for amd64, same problem.

X starts driver "vesa" by default: only 640x480 can be selected. No way to change its mind. When changing resolutions in KUbuntu on amd64, driver "ati" reports it cannot be tested and does nothing when pressing on the "Close" button. Same for fglrx. (Maybe the dialog has more buttons, cannot say since the screen is so small.)

I have seen a similar error reported for X300 mobility in bug 32368, nothing exactly like this.

Thanks for your bug report. Could you follow what is explained in the following WiKi page:

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This was after
$ sudo dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and after killing gdm. By they way, had to use a kill -9, since the suggested line:
$ sudo invoke-rc.d gdm stop
was not working. May I suggest that you could update the page for Dapper, or add to it the relevant section as it is missing?

$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.20060516235426

And by the way, the page asks for XF86Config-4.backup*, but there is no such file. Again, may I suggest that you update the page and add the relevant section for Dapper? Thanks!

After the line:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
and entering the most common options everything went fine. They were: Spanish keyboard (it's a USB model), first selected mouse (which worked even for the USB mouse), and let it do its job. The monitor is a 17" Proview TFT.

Installation went fine after this, and it installed the right xorg configuration. Works fine on disk. Thanks a lot!

I also have the same problem with the Ubuntu 6.06 live CD, an LG L1730S and a graphics card detected as a Radeon R200 QL (not sure about this)

On boot the resolution selected is 640 by 480 and the screen resolution utility does not let me change it from this.

I resolved this as follows:

 * Press Ctrl - Alt - F1 to switch to a text mode shell.
 * Type sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg - the default settings worked for me.
 * Press Ctl - Alt- F7 to return to graphics mode
 * Press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to reboot the xserver.

Please find attached the request information.

cheers,
Stu

I don't know if it's the same issue at hand, but in bug #40503 there are also things broken during the initial auto-configuration that work fine when "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" is run manually afterwards.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
