Like I told before the bug seems to be in the package gnumeric itself (gnumeric-gnome?) because everything is working fine with the package gnumeric-gtk.

heh we just packaged gnumeric-gtk, have no idea what's inside ;)
the no error message is understandable as gnumeirc-gtk does not use gconf at all so does not warn if some keys are missing. But the difference in results I am not sure.

I've tested the file with gnumeric/gnumeric-gtk using libgoffice and libgoffice-gtk for both, I can read the file correctly each time.

the thing is that I don't have any problem with gnumeric-gtk. The problems are with the package gnumeric. It's not a big deal for me because I found the workaround by install gnumeric-gtk but there are something strange at least for me with gnumeric.

what version of gnumeric do you use? your example opens fine with gnumeric 1.7.2-1ubuntu1 on my desktop

I'm not surprised, it's working for me too but 1.7.2 is not the versions in dapper or edgy. The gnumeric version in dapper or in edgy are not good and it's a problem with the package because when I compiled them myself with the archive from gnumeric website, eveyrthing is working (version 1.7.0 or higher).
Now I'm using a version I compiled myself on edgy (I upgraded when edgy became official but gnumeric does have some very nasty bug at this time).
