Bug Description

Totem actually plays this file fine if it is opened manually. Appears to be a variation and yet-another-entension for '.asx'.

$ head -1 /tmp/baa.wvx
<asx version="3.0">
$ file /tmp/baa.wvx
/tmp/baa.wvx: ASCII text, with CRLF line terminators

Are you sure it's not just a misnamed file?

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Is that totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? How do you try to open the file? From nautilus? Could you describe the issue you face? Do you have a small example to attach to the bug or an URL do download one to point?

Googling for "baa.wvx", this might have been when the the A380 visited Heathrow for trials. 'BAA' is the British Airports Authority (now owned by the Spanish). I found the URL:

  http://82.108.51.234/baa/baa.wvx

which returns the full XML description. The streaming must have just been for that week/day as the actual mms:// URI's referenced in the XML no longer work.

With 'avisynth.dll', mplayer and xine seem happy parsing this. For totem I appear to have the 'totem-xine' one currently installed:

  $ dpkg -l | awk '/totem-(gstreamer|xine)/{print$1,$2}'
  rc totem-gstreamer
  ii totem-xine

On edgy with totem-gstreamer I tried to use the wvx files available at http://www.wsa.soton.ac.uk/choosing-wsa/streaming-video/default.asp

There was no player known for this file. I have the necessary codecs for windows media player, so browsing to /usr/bin/totem in firefox caused totem to fire up and it worked fine.

The file is a redirect to a windows media file:

<ASX version = "3.0">
  <ENTRY>
    <REF HREF = "mms://mms.soton.ac.uk/art_fashion/fashion2005_390k.wmv"/>
  </ENTRY>
</ASX>

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=WVX lists the mime type as video/x-ms-wvx

As totem parses this it should be added to the system mime listings.

the video starts on feisty, might have been fixed with the mozilla plugin fixes from the new version

Does anybody still have the problem with Feisty?

Clicking on the link above opens a video window within Firefox (good).
Saving the link to the desktop and double-clicking opens Totem (also good).

Double result.
