Bug Description

X won't start with ATI X800 series, this problems already happened in ubuntu 5.10

I think would help thousands of ubuntu starters if the default xorg.conf file comes with "vesa" drives instead "ati" for ALL ATI CARDS (or x800/x700/x600/x300/x200 at least)

my ubuntu topic including the screen of death: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=183643

Thank You Very Much

I have the exact same problem. I have an ATI X800 graphics card and AMD Athlon64 X2, and X won't start. I have tried Ubuntu 5.10 PC, Ubuntu 5.10 64-bit, Kubuntu 6.06 PC, and Kubuntu 6.06 64-bit.

Ubuntu 5.10 gives the error while Kubuntu 6.06 just hangs right before KDE should load.

I tried Kubuntu under safe graphics mode, but the exact same problem occurs (it hangs).

I am not very tech savvy about Ubuntu or Linux, but Kubuntu is my favorte distribution.

Thank you very much.

I switched to the fglrx drivers on Kubuntu 64-bit 6.06 to fix the problem for my computer, but when I upgraded to 6.10, the graphics reverted back to the problematic drivers. This problem probably exists even if you upgrade from the Ubuntu distribution (64-bit or 32-bit). That means that upgrading changes the drivers back; this is also something that should be considered.
