Have user-built modules provide vmware-player-kernel-modules

Bug Description

Hi,

can we change the dependency to "vmware-player-kernel-modules | vmware-player-kernel-source" so there is no need to install the linux-image-2.6.15-23-386?

I have a custom compiled kernel and don't need it.

Best regards,
Whoopie

I just found out that you can't build a custom vmware-player modules package because debian/control is missing.

Do you have a copy of the error messages from the failed build?

attached the build log.

BTW, the instructions in /usr/share/doc/vmware-player-kernel-source/README.Debian to do "make; make install" /usr/src/modules/vmware-player-kernel/ also don't work.
There's no Makefile in this directory. If I change in the directory vm{mon,net}-only, I can do a "make", but not a "make install" because there's no rule for it.

I have the same problem (cannot read debian/control).
Actually it would be nice if binary vmware-player-kernel-modules
was upgraded together with kernel.

I've got a change sent off to Ubuntu people to fix this, I imagine it's in the approval queue.

I lied, I submitted a fix for 49924 (which the first comment is about), not this bug. I don't see this problem though.

You don't see the problem with building modules from source?
Does it work for you?
I had the same output as Whoopie attached in build.log

The build error is fixed with vmware-player-kernel-source 2.6.15 (2.6.15.10-9). Thanks!

But the dependency is not changed, so this bug report is still valid.

When custom kernel modules are built they should Provides: vmware-player-kernel-modules. Just having the source installed doesn't mean that the binary modules have been built.

In /usr/src/modules/vmware-player-kernel/debian, do "cp control.modules.in control" and the module will build with m-a.
