Bug Description

Binary package hint: gaim

(umlaute = ä,ü,ö)

the german umlaute in N/A messages are not shown correctly; you see messages like:
"DrauÄỸsen" where ÄỸ stands for "ß".

I think this is the UTF-8 and ISO-8819-15 (or whatever) problem.

Thanks for your bug. What version of gaim do you use? What charset is configured for the account to the properties of gaim? What client does the other people you have the issue with are using?

This bug is in the "original" gaim package, too - so it's not an ubuntu bug, but I thinik, Ubuntu as UTF8 distro could patch this for its package.

I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper, with newest updates, gaim is 1.5.1cvs (installed from synaptic).

The problem appears at the N/A message from ICQ users; so the problem is the windows charset. And I'm using the standard charset from gaim, i changed nothing.

I'm fairly certain this is fixed in the 2.0.0betas, though in at least the most recent one (probably all), nickname encoding handling is broken.

ICQ does not always send/recieve UTF8, in fact it often does not. what is your encoding set to in your account settings?

all german "umlaute" in my contact list aren't shown correctly (ü = ü etc.). when I change them with the "alias..." option (on right click in the contact list) to correct ü to ü manually, the "umlaute" ä ö ü are shown correctly. When I close Gaim and start it again the "umlaute" are broken again. Writing people (which are using icq software on windows) ä ö ü-"umlaute" in instant massenges, is working correct for me.

- I'm using Gaim2beta3.1 on Ubuntu Edgy
- I'm using gaim with the icq protocol
- I use the same .gaim directory from previous gaim versions (cause I use the same /home till dapper)

Something wrong between the sync./encoding between the icq server (who stores the contact list) and gaim? I don't know!

Still an issue with gaim 2.0beta3.1 from edgy, a contact with non-ascii name is not displayed correctly by the contacts list, the same contact is displayed correctly by evolution if the list is sync with evolution-data-server or by gaim 1.5

For me this problem only started to occur when I either upgraded to edgy or when gaim moved to version 2.x (this might really be the same). Before it was working OK.

Actually, where I see it is ICQ Names. So this may or may not be the same problem.

This is fixed for me in pidgin 2.2.0 on gutsy. I am closing the report.

Feel free to reopen it if you experience this problem on a recent version of pidgin.
