Could you please get into more detail on why you can't install the guest additions?

Since this is kind of old, I was wondering if the issue was the same thing I was experiencing.

I'm running WIndows XP as a guest in Ubuntu, 9.04 Karmic Koala. I'm running VirtualBox 3.0.8_OSE r53138. The install of Virtual Box goes just great, installed windows xp, upgraded WIndows XP to SP3 with no issues. Now, clicking "Devices -> Install Guest Additions" does not bring up the installer for the VBox Guest Additions. I then click on My Computer, in the Guest OS, and see that the ISO is mounted, but the icon is not a CD, but the "No icon associated with this file type", I took a screen shot of what it look like in My Computer (Attached screenshotte.png).

Now, I then click on the Address Bar in Windows Explorer and type in D: <Enter>. I am able to see the ISO mounted at this point. I can double click on autorun.ini and it comes up just fine in notepad, but when I double click on the "VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe" file, the error dialog "D:\VboxWindowsAdditions.exe is not a valid Win32 application".

I install VirtualBox from the "Ubuntu Software Center" which I assume was just a GUI front end for apt-get. I removed virtual box using the "Ubuntu Software Center" and installed using apt-get. The command I used was "apt-get install virtualbox-ose-qt". Still the same results, no autorun, cannot execute file. I'm using the standard apt-get repos that come with Karmic.

The steps taken to get the guest additions to run was running : apt-get install virtualbox-guest-additions.

I've been using Ubuntu for one or two version, and in the past, a separate command was not needed to install the guest additions. I'm not sure the reasoning behind making is a separate, independent package, but this issue made me create a support forum request here: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31511&start=0&sid=0c6aa059a7c400bd0efb091cba26b67e

It seems like this could be handled another way:

1) If the guest additions package has not been install, do not allow the "Device->Install Guest Additions" menu to be selected and mount some strange iso that give strange results

or

2) Install the guest additions when installing the main virtualbox-ose-qt package.

Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your contribution to this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. My apologies as I should not have marked this bug Invalid. Because I could not find a 3.2.8 Maintainer PPA nor would a live CD of Maverick Meerkat fit this situation, you will have to wait for someone with more knowledgeable to help. However, the best I can offer is to download the newest VirtualBox 3.2.8 via http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/3.2.8/virtualbox-3.2_3.2.8-64453~Ubuntu~lucid_i386.deb Disclaimer: this is a Pandora's box suggestion but will help settle this issue.
