You should provide /var/log/cups/error_log, /etc/cups/printers.conf

Could you try with some other application (evince, etc...)? But, please, before you try, add this to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://people.ubuntu.com/~pitti/packages/libgnomeprint/ ./

run apt-get update, apt-get upgrade.

Thank you.

I upgraded like mentioned before
for testing i started evince in a shell.
no heres the outout from shell:

when choosing "print":
Model not found, discarding config

(evince:6644): GnomePrint-WARNING **: Could not create filter from
description 'frgba': filter 'frgba' is unknown

when setting layout and 2 pages per sheet a item apears in the printer
queue but nothing happen.
printing one page per sheet works

error_log/access_log/page_log still are empty

some ideas what to do next?

ohh and thanks so far because i really need to use this feature
otherwise the printer is not very useable for me.

regards
razahel

something I forgot to mention after printer such a job (2 or more pages a sheet)
the gnome cups dialog says:
PRINT: USB printer is busy; will retry in 5 seconds...
but the printer never returns

i restarted cupsys ... nothing
the only thing which helps is rebooting or unpluggin the printer and replug it

Can you verify you have libgnomeprint2.2-0 version 2.12.1-3ubuntu2 installed as Anté suggested (dpkg -l libgnomeprint2* should give the answer).

Can you try if n-up printing from a command line
works by printing a multipage pdf document, e.g.:
$ lp -d Canon -o number-up=4 file.pdf

Your original bug report (haven't read the postings below that) looks like your original print file is content with some issue, so that what CUPS' pstops filter sees coming along has a problem (like not being compliant as "DSC PostScript") it cannot process correctly.

It could also be a problem of the application generating the PostScript print file. Which filetype are you trying to print from which application?

Can you post a link to the file, so I can have a look?

I hope it helps to solve the problem.
Thanks so far!

XPP does not modify the data stream which goes to the printer, it only send the option settings chosen in th GUI to CUPS together with the job. So

lpr -P <printer> -o number-up=4 <file>

is asolutely equivalent to

xpp <file>

when choosing the printer <printer> in XPP and then clicking "Options" and choosing 4 pages per sheet.

So try

lpr -P <printer> -o number-up=4 <file>

at first to make sure that it is not an XPP problem.
