This seems to be a regression issue involving Bug 173652.

I'm also attaching dmesg which I ran just recently while getting output from xev.

Almost forgot to mention this.. gnome-power-manage adjusts the brightness absolutely fine. It seems to be just the keyboard input that's not recognized.

This was on Lucid. I'm now waiting for the release of Lucid before I try this again so I will assume the issue has been resolved in the meantime.
