I am downloading Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit on to a clean hard drive. I am able to get to where I must put my name and password and then after that I get the message cannot install 5 EIO Input/Output error

How did you create the usb live disk?
Maybe the drive is damaged, diid you try to write the imamge and install ubuntu again?
Maybe the image you downloaded was corrupted, did you check the checksum of the .iso?
