Bug Description

Binary package hint: adept

When searching for or filtering packages with adept, the program's performance is so poor that i consider that to be a bug. Note that i'm using adept on a rather fast PC (Athlon XP 2600+, 1,5 GB RAM). Also, aptitude is soo much faster...

I don't know if this is exactly what the original poster was talking about, but I find Adept Installer ("Add / Remove Programs") to be *really* slow. I've always just apt-get install'ed things, but I'm trying the GUI out now that I've got newbies on Kubuntu.

The problem is that, every time I check a box, the GUI freezes until *all* dependancies, etc. are checked. This really gets in the way of usability and makes me want to just drop to a shell (which I can't recommend to newbies).

Since Qt has such a great signal-slot mechanism, why can't ticking a box just fire off a signal to a worker thread, which updates the list of packages to install in the *background*? As it is, it's really quite irritating.

I don't have much time, but I have some Qt experience, and I'd be willing to look at this issue if the patches are likely to get considered.

A use case:

Bob, having just installed Kubuntu from CD, wants to see what games are available for Linux. He runs "Add / Remove Programs" and sees a list of hundreds of games.

Desired Behaviour:
Bob selects a bunch of them (say, twenty or so), clicks "Inspect Changes" and then installs them. He has lots of fun and recommends Linux to everybody he meets. World peace ensues.

Actual Behaviour:
Bob selects a bunch of them (say, twenty or so), but because he has to wait 5-10 seconds between *every* *single* *mouse* *click*, he gives up and tells everybody he knows "Linux is really slow". People who were on the verge of trying Ubuntu for themselves decide not to in the face of such a negative review.

Okay, so that might be a little exaggerated, but this is a real usability issue.

Above use case is not too exaggerated.

On top of the described actual behavior, it happens sometimes that a certain click activates some other programs. Sometimes, when hasty, you click on another program, however, it is still processing the first, which means now you have *disabled* that program. With it, some other programs are disabled, and suddenly you find yourself in a terrible lag-and-clickfest.

Please accept this as a bug that renders Adept near useless.

I run a P4 3.0 Ghz with 2 GB RAM.

Waiting for adept to check which apps you have installed and wait for it to load all the lists is also extremely long. Sometimes I think something must be going wrong in the system when I open "Add/Remove Apps".

I'm using a pretty core2duo/1,25 GB ram. My preference is kde instead gnome, but Synaptic is very funcional, while adept is very, very, very bad. Someone known any other add/remove apps that I can use with kde??

Confirmed - Adept is unusably slow and feels like it will crash at any moment. Selecting single software packages takes longer than it should. Kubuntu 7.10 - Dell Inspiron E1505 Dual Core T7200/2G RAM

Could everybody who is reporting this *PLEASE* quantify their report in some way (preferably in seconds or in the number of beers they consumed while waiting)?

"Slow" is such a relative term that I think we need to get away from it. I see someone talking about 5-10 seconds per selection, and I haven't really experienced that... we'll have to troubleshoot that a little more.

Actually, performance is much better for me in Gutsy. I'd call it usable now!

When I click on a category (e.g. Settings), it takes ~3s to switch view.

Selecting a program (e.g. GBINDADMIN) takes ~2s.

It used to be more like 5-10s when I clicked on a program.

Ok.

In my experience, for each packet added I wait between 1 and 5 minutes
(minutes, I said). The variation is due a dependencies checking, I think..
In multiple selection, depending of how much itens I select, the wait extend
for many HOURS ....I abort the process after circa 2 hours. For experience I
select many, many itens (dozens of it). The system almost freeze.

Freshly installed kubuntu on a 1.2GHz Pentium M with 1.25GB RAM (Thinkpad X40): From clicking on the game 'KQ' until it's actually marked: about 18 seconds, during which adept does not respond at all.

Doesn't matter what package I chose, this was just an example.
