brasero can't find CD drive

Bug Description

Binary package hint: brasero

karmic. brasero 2.28.2-0ubuntu1

brasero seems to be unable to find the CD drive (or more specifically the CD in it), when attempting to copy a data CD. there are no messages in the system logs.

seen on both a real PC, and also in a VMware VM.

it doesn't matter whether the CD is inserted before or after brasero is started. it also makes no difference whether the CD is mounted or not.

even forcing brasero to try and copy from the device (eg: 'brasero -c /dev/sr0') doesn't work.

gnomebaker sees the disk and copies it happily.

Thanks for your report, could you get a brasero log? please run brasero as: brasero --brasero-burn-debug --brasero-media-debug &> brasero-debug.txt ; perform the operation to reproduce the bug and attach that resulting log file to the report, thanks.

the results are identical, except for the PID numbers in the log.

I understand there's no obvious error there, but there's not a lot I can do. I start brasero, hit the 'Disc copy' button, and get a dialog that tells me 'Select disc to copy' with a grayed out dropdown that says 'No available disc'. there's a CD in the (virtual) drive. it appears in the places menu, and gnomebaker is quite happy to copy it.

there are these lines in the log:

which look to contain errors: "SCSI command error: Invalid command", "GET PERFORMANCE failed", "wrong page size".

this should be easy to replicate - just create a VMWare VM, boot a karmic live CD in it, then run brasero...

PS. I've seen identical behavior on a 'real' PC too, but I don't have immediate access to that PC.

I'm not in VMWare though. This is straight install, Ubuntu 9.10 fully patched. Same problem as normal user or "sudo brasero"

sigh. I didn't bother replying to the previous request for 'testing with gnomebaker', because I'd quite clearly stated earlier in the bug report that 'gnomebaker is quite happy to copy it'... so my bug report wasn't being read.

as far as the requirements for testing, starting a vmware VM with a karmic CD in the drive is pretty easy to replicate.
