Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Ctrl-Alt-F1 for terminal session, ran ubuntu-bug xorg however the procedure won't complete reporting without xorg running, which is the problem.

I did save the apport log, Xorg.0.log, and xsession errors which I'll try to attach below, using karmic.

Jerry, since ubuntu-bug needs firefox to report the bug, it does not work very well when X isn't working. However, you may report the bug and then run `apport-collect <bug #>` in order to upload the apport information (it needs networking to function, but not X). It will upload the same information that is contained in the apport-file you uploaded, but it will also split the big files into separate attachments.

Geir, thanks much for your help on the 'apport-collect <bug #>'. With yesterday's updates via recovery mode, fix broken packages the kernel 2.6.32-9 & xorg-video-intel are cooperating O.K. on this i845.

Will watch to see if xorg hangs now; entering this comment it's running O.K.

Thanks, Jerry

Oh, no, 'apport collect 499102' threw me into the X window menu panel where it says

Log in or register with Launchpad

and will not accept any keyboard input. It's obviously intended for xorg which doesn't work.

"Your login was unsuccessful"

'apport collect bug#' expects xorg to run.

Sorry I was wrong about apport-collect. It seems it will require a web browser to log in the first time it is used. From then on it will store the credentials for later. From the man page of apport-collect:

       ~/.cache/apport/launchpad.credentials
In order to add new information to the bug report, the user
needs to log into Launchpad. The first time you run apport-col‐
lect you will be directed to the Launchpad login page in your
web browser. Allow the script to change all data (write
access), and just follow the instructions.

The credentials are written to this cache file so if you run
apport-collect the next time you do not need to log in any more.

It seems that also ubuntu-bug (a.k.a. apport-bug) can upload the apport-file post mortem (from a working system). From its man page:

Finally, you can use this program to report a previously stored crash
       or bug report:

           apport-bug /var/crash/_bin_bash.1000.crash
           apport-bug /tmp/apport.firefox.332G9t.apport

(Bug reports can be written to a file with apport-cli.)

apport-bug detects whether KDE or Gnome is running and calls apport-gtk
or apport-kde accordingly. If neither is available, or the session does
not run under X11, it calls apport-cli for a command-line client.

Jerry, I think you may have two different bugs in your logs. Some of them show a backtrace at the end of Xorg.0.log which means that Xorg crashed. Some do not have this and you report that the mouse cursor can be moved but everything else is frozen along with messages in dmesg about the GPU being wedged [1]. For crashes we need a full backtrace, and how to get one is described at [2]. I suggest we focus on the crash and not the GPU hang/freeze here. There is some general information about freeze bugs and especially how to get a batchbuffer dump at [3].

Here's xsession errors. I didn't see anything useful in Xorg.0.log.old. When crash occurs (using Gnome) the system goes to an immediate halt. This is LXDE which is still running for a few minutes at least....

Not sure if ubuntu-bug xorg is useful after a reboot??

Since system is dead altogether can't do a ssh in to do a batchbuffer dump.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install --reinstall upstart xserver-xorg-video-all xserver-xorg-video-intel xserver-xorg-core xserver-xorg

Essentially at A2 level, black screen in minutes. Unresponsive to tty.

"nomodeset" and "vesa" runs for hours.

Progress....

A2 CD live won't boot, initial boot screen freezes no matter what is tried on the linux boot line.

A1 updated to A2 level won't run any time at all unless "nomodeset" and "vesa" are used.

A2 Alternate installed O.K., has been running! (careful! Don't update it, it's running!)

So on this machine the fix is the A2 alternate install.

This is Lucid 10.04 installed via A2 Alternate CD and updated frequently today now at:

Linux version 2.6.32-14-generic (buildd@vernadsky) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-2ubuntu2) ) #20-Ubuntu SMP Sat Feb 20 05:38:50 UTC 2010

1. With nomodeset and "vesa" it runs O.K. as I'm entering this comment.
This is the i845 reported on the bug. The 2.6.32-9 was on Lucid.
The most updated Karmics I have are on 2.6.31-19.

2. With modeset at default and "vesa" boots to black screen. ssh to terminal then did ubuntu-bug xorg which I'll attach.

3. With nomodeset and default xorg boots to black screen with fixed cursor hazy round figure. ssh doesn't work. Nothing on keyboard works.

4. rsync today's build Lucid 21 Feb 2010 md5sum check good.
Boot try: Check disk for defects.
No response. Menu just sits there. No action at all. tty dead.

5. Boot try "ubuntu with no change..."
No response. Menu just sits there. tty dead.

6. Boot try F6 replace "quiet nomodeset" with "single"
No response. Menu screen sits there. tty dead.

7. Boot try acpi off, no apic, no lapic, no modeset.
Menu screen just sits there. tty dead.
   CD light flashes. Forever.

8. Boot try nomodeset
Menu screen just sits there. tty dead.
    CD light flashes. Forever.

Any other trial suggestions?

Anyway, with "nomodeset" and "vesa" I'm running from an Alternate A2 install updated frequently.

Can't do ssh or anything else to get debug info.

In contrast, recent install from mini .iso karmic 2.6.31-19 runs fine with default modeset on and with default xorg. This is a multi boot so it's easy to try one or the other.

Thanks for reporting this bug to help making the Intel graphics driver
better. We hear from upstream that a number of bugs (possibly including
this one) have been fixed in the newer DRM code from the 2.6.33 kernel.
I don't know if your bug is one of the ones fixed in this release,
though, but we've prepared a PPA with this DRM update. Would you mind
installing this, rebooting, and testing if the original issue can be
reproduced with it or not?

The DRM PPA is here:

    https://edge.launchpad.net/~apw/+archive/red

Note there could be new bugs... please file these as new reports using
the command 'ubuntu-bug linux' (for kernel or DRM or KMS bugs) or
'ubuntu-bug xorg' if you suspect them to be X.org issues.

I'm not sure from your last comment if you've tried the DRM backport kernel - this is now in the default Lucid install, as the 2.6.32-16 kernel.

Is X still being unstable when you boot into the 2.6.32-16 kernel? Recent daily CDs will also have this kernel, as will the Beta 1 CDs.
