Bug Description

Screen freezes black and locks up randomly. Only a hard reboot will bring it back.

Several others on Ubuntu Forums have reported similar problems.

Usually I have a fair amount of programs running when it happens. Memory issue? (I have 500 MB and don't run games or other memory hogs.)

Computer is a Dell Notebook 640C running Dapper.

Thanks for reporting this bug.

Just to trying to get some more information, what video card are you running? Have you modified any of the Xorg configuration at all or running different drivers?

The answer to your question is yes--after I changed my default video card from ATI to VESA, the problem went away.

However, I don't consider that this closes the bug, because Ubuntu shouldn't misdetect a videocard in the first place.

For the record, my video card is an ATI mobility radeon 7500. However, in spite of its name, this card clearly does NOT work with the ATI driver and should NOT be auto-installed by Dapper during installation from the live CD. VESA should be installed instead.

Thanks for your attention,

Dave
