changing display resolution in dapper causes crash

Bug Description

I upgraded from breezy to dapper

The display is very slow and clunky, so I attempted to go from 1280x1024 to 1024x768. The screen went all blurry, then crashed, bringing me back to the log in screen.

It was the fastest log out I have ever experienced :)
