What do you mean it doesn't work? It silently fails to print? It gives an error message? How did you try to install it?

I have the same printer in ubuntu 6.06, and it's detected and installed via add printer. Every application can detect it and print to it. The problem is that the first page that rolls out is blank and the rest of the pages come out perfectly. This happens no matter what application I print from. I've tried firefox, lyx, and evince, all leave the first page of the job blank. There is no error message, only a blank first page of the job.

Does this mean support for the Laserjet 1020 been added to hplip?
According to this:
http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_devices/unsupported.html it's
not, and I looked in recent release notes which doesn't mention support
for 1020 having been added.

The HP LaserJet 1020 is NOT supported by HPLIP. I have corrected the package to which this bug report is assigned.

Can you please post the output of the commands

ls -l /usr/lib/cups/backend
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usblp0
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usblp1
grep -A4 cupsys/backend /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
ls -l /dev/usblp*

and the file

/proc/bus/usb/devices

Please also attach the output of the printingbug info script. The
printingbug info script can be found here:

First, let me say at some point around January I tried some instructions
on how to get the 1020 working, which I found somewhere on the
Internet. The printer is now working pretty consistently.

Anyway, I attached two text files containing the output you request the
output which you requested.

The foo2zjs which comes with Edgy should fully support the printer. Important is to install the printer's firmware file, see bug 65618.

On Feisty a tool to easily download the firmware file is added. If you have Feisty, do

getweb 1020

to download the firmware file.

After downloading the firmware file I had to convert the downloaded file from a sihp1020.img file to 1020.dl file

I used this command: sudo arm2hpdl sihp1020.img > sihp1020.dl

Then I had to copy it into /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1020.dl

Then I switched the printer on, and added the printer to the computer printers and it worked
