UK Pound sign key not handled correctly by ncurses

Bug Description

When using Aubit 4gl (www.aubit.com), hitting the UK pound sign key produces an NCURSES error - "Error status number -30225","Form driver complaint".

A display of a pound character within Aubit shows an unknown representation in a standard (UTF-8) Gnome terminal, but does not cause a fatal error. Using ISO-8859-15 encoding, the display is right, but hitting the pound sign key still causes a fatal error.

Working sideways to get something specific -
showkey within Gnome Terminal 2.14.2 returns an error "Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console".
So does dumpkeys.

I believe this bug is not specific to ncurses but has something to do with the keyboard generating the wrong code when the pound key is pressed.
Since installing 6.06 (on a machine previously running Mandriva) my pound key generates an extra (control?) character as well as the correct pound sign. I assume it's a control character, because it doesn't actually display during typing but (for example) DOES appear if I use the key when editing a web page (example at http://home.beermad.org.uk/keyproblem.html)

Do you experience the same difficulty on a virtual terminal, such as is accessed via Ctrl-Alt-F1? (Use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to an X session).
