Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Hello!

I recently updated to Lucid. I noticed this problem:

When I suspend the computer, everything seems OK. However, when I resume, the screen remains turned off. I can see the system turned on—for example, the numlock key turns the LED on and off—but the screen doesn't turn on.

The only thing that seems to work is pressing Alt-F6 and then Alt-F7. I tried pressing other keys (in case the problem was just the screensaver) but that doesn't work. Neither Alt-F7 directly nor other Alt-F# followed by Alt-F7 works.

Once the screen turns on (after Alt-F6 and Alt-F7), the password dialog of the screensaver* comes up and I can continue my session. (* I have my computer set up to lock the screen, but with no actual screensaver on other than turning off the screen.)

Note that after the session resumes I experience bug #528138 which might be related somehow.

I have a similar problem on a Dell Vostro 1500 (nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400M GS]), running Lucid Alpha 3 (2.6.32-15-generic) with nvidia-current (195.36.03).
Suspend works, but on resume the screen is blank. Switching to tty (Ctrl+Alt+F2) followed by Alt+F7 / Alt+F8 sometimes brings back the GDM login screen, but not always. When that doesn't work, it requires a hard reset.

I just tried that, and I encountered bug #516381, several times. Example output with GTK_DEBUG=all at https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apport/+bug/516381/comments/5

(Tangential: how can I make a wiki-style link in these comments, ie have something else than the link address displayed? I know about just mentioning a bug number and linking it automatically, but can that work for other links?)

That said, during the last week or so the behavior of the bug changed: the screen is still blank and I have to play with Ctrl-Alt-F7 to turn it on, but now I’m always sent to the GDM login window. I’m not sure what happens with the suspended session, I don’t see crash reports after the login, usually.
