Bug Description

Binary package hint: kernel-image-2.6.15-26-386-di

I am running Dapper on a system with a Jetway 625EMP800 motherboard with a VIA chipset and CPU (more details below on the hardware). I upgraded on 11 July (apt-get) and developed sound problems on installing the 2.6.15-26-386 kernel. The logon sound when the logon screen appears kept repeating, and the sound after logging on, and all other sounds did also. I just found a 'cure' - revert to the previous kernel - 2.6.15-25-386 - and the problem goes away. (The logon sound I had chose was a short 'thump' and the bug results in a repeated thump-thump-thump- ... sound).

My initial workaround was to remove my login from the audio group - then I'd get the problem while the login screen was up, but sound was disabled after I logged in, which was ok if I didn't need audio. Since I did want sound, this was a serious problem!

I can run further tests with both kernels if necessary to track this down.

I also had a similar problem with the screensaver - when active, it appeared to freeze the system - I'll investigate that further and see if there's a relationship. There was already a screensaver problem with the earlier kernel.

I just installed the 17 July 2006 build of the kernel 2.6.15-26-386 - this made no difference in this problem. Again, I had to revert to the 2.6.15-25-386 kernel.

Adding "acpi=off" to the grub boot stanza for this kernel stops this from happening. See Bug #52649 .

Sorry Jerome, I should have replied last time but have been incredibly busy.

Unfortunately, I ended up swapping my mobo out before it got fixed I
think. I now have an Asus board with intel CPU so cannot confirm the
current status.

My sincerest apologies,
Whytey
