Bug Description
Binary package hint: libpoppler1-qt
libpoppler1-qt cannot be installed and this breaks all dependent packages. I discovered this when I could not install kubuntu-desktop. When I run
apt-get install libpoppler1-qt
it returns the following error:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libpoppler1-qt: Depends: libpoppler1 (= 0.5.1-0ubuntu7) but 0.5.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages
This appears to be easily fixable by the package maintainer, but it makes all Qt/KDE apps that depend on poppler uninstallable.

What version of Ubuntu does this happen on and is it still happening after you run sudoa pt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade?

It was happening in dapper 6.06, with official repos, after doing
apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade. It only worked after I
uninstalled the offending packages and forced the install to an older
version.

Next time you get a broken packages and your up-to-date its always a good idea to see if "sudo apt-get -f install" fixes it. I gonna try this later tonight when im on my dapper box and see if i can confirm this but i feel that this has been fixed already. I would feel more comfortable if it was able to be confirmed. I will let you know what i come up with tonight.

works on both ubuntu dapper and edgy. Please update your mirrors if you are still having trouble.

In your /etc/apt/
John Vivirito (gnomefreak) wrote : | #8 |
I forgot first thing to try would be sudo apt-get update than sudo apt-get upgrade.
jens_acamedia (commercial-acamedia) wrote : | #9 |
thanks john but theres no country code. heres my /etc/apt/
i even disabled backports...
i tried with force option "apt-get -f" and no change.
i cant remove libpoppler1-qt since this is precisely the package which
wont install and is causing the problem in the first place...
in short...none of the solutions proposed worked...id be grateful for
ideas...
thanks!

if update and upgrade dont work for you please try to remove libpoppler1 and try to install kubuntu-desktop
jens_acamedia (commercial-acamedia) wrote : | #11 |
of course i did an apt-get update...dont see how apt-get upgrade should
be relevant to this issue but i did one anyway...
still does not work. the dependency problem runs like this
kubuntu-desktop depends kdegraphics-
kdegraphics-
libpoppler1-qt depends libpoppler1 which wont install...
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
libpoppler1-qt: Depends: libpoppler1 (= 0.5.1-0ubuntu7) but
0.5.3-0ubuntu1 is to be installed

it doesnt sound right to be forced to remove ubuntu-desktop which is
what removing libpoppler1 means...
id rather wait for a fix...i shouldnt have to downgrade libpoppler1
which is a dependency for ubuntu to install kubuntu, should i?

" sudo apt-get -f install" run that command just as i typed it without the ". it does not force anything the -f = --fix-missing. this fix was released a while ago. I moved it back to needs info for the time being. give me outptu of the sudo apt-get -f install command. please dont use a package name with that command.

nothing with automatix is official so when you stated you use only official repos that was not true. My sources.list file should fix this if not i recommend fixing your install anything that automatix installed or removed along with removing automatix. I talked to the maintainer that worked on this bug and it is fixed. This fix was released a while back and has not been a problem since. Let me know what happens if you replace your /etc/apt/
jens_acamedia (commercial-acamedia) wrote : | #16 |
did you read the sources.list which i sent you or did you just read the
COMMENTED OUT lines which mention automatix.
i know youre trying to help and im grateful but if you had looked you
would have noticed that my sources.list contains the same entries as yours.
to prove this point i did as you said and replaced my sources.list with
yours to come up with the same error.
thanks for your attempts but i think we need somebody who knows more
about this issue.

paste the output of apt-cache policy libpoppler1 kubuntu-desktop and libpoppler1-qt and kdebase please.
Sebastian Dröge (slomo) wrote : | #18 |
what's the output of
apt-cache policy libpoppler1-qt
apt-cache policy libpoppler1
?
Both should show 0.5.1-0ubuntu7 as installable candidate... 0.5.3-0ubuntu1 was never in dapper and can't be referenced from any package. we only got this a few days ago in edgy.
Is it possible that automatix or something else enabled the xgl repository for some time and you updated poppler?

thank you all for your time. i finally found out how to downgrade
packages by downloading them manually from the web ubuntu dapper package
download. i then used dpkg -i to install them.
i didnt know that apt-get and synaptics couldnt do downgrades. somehow
these packages were too high in version number. perhaps from when i
tried to get rhythmbox 0.95 running.
is there a better and more efficient way to downgrade for future
reference? couldnt synaptics give the option to downgrade packages which
have higher versions than the repos?
thanks for helping me out. thanks sebastian for pointing out to me that
this package is not part of dapper and needed to be downgraded.
after downgrading libpoppler1 and libpoppler1-glib its all good and kde
is downloading...
thanks

Synaptic can in fact downgrade packages. Select the package and in the
Package menu at the top select "Force Version..."
The package also appears to be fixed for me. I can now install it
normally.
Sebastian Dröge (slomo) wrote : | #23 |
it can but you still need to downgrade all packages individually

I also have trouble with this :(
Kubuntu-desktop woudn't install and I figure uot that the trouble was in libpoppler1. Then I run: sudo apt-get install libpoppler1=
An it wanted to remove ubuntu-desktop!!! So I pressed ctrl+c a lot times and run: sudo dpkg --configure -a. Now I tried to install ubuntu-desktop. Now it depends on evince, that depends on libpoppler1 (version 0.5.1-0ubuntu7), it still has 0.5.3-0ubuntu2.
Should I just install 0.5.1-0ubuntu7 and let it remove ubuntu-desktop, and install it after?
John Vivirito (gnomefreak) wrote : | #25 |
let it remove ubuntu-desktop its a meta package and is not needed unless you are running testing (edgy). if you want it back install it when you are done with the other problems.
Can anyone with a spare computer and a ubuntu install disc confirm this? (I gave my old computer away :( )
