Bug Description

Last week I experienced a bug in kdm which couldn't manage to start kde normaly after aswering login/password, so that kdm restart eatch time I gave my login/pass and pressed "enter".

I knew that my disk might be full, so using winxp and explore2fs, I went on kubuntu HD and remove some files. Then reboot and kdm managed to launch kde...

The fact is that it would be fair if kdm could inform user that low disk space is the reason why kde won't boot, so users won't go crazy wondering why their friendly distro won't work.

best regards

Emmanuel (France)

Another French talking kubuntu 6.06 user had the same problem with kdm behaviour on low disk space:

removing files in "recovery mod" resolved his problem.

This is a very painful bug, as a "normal computer user" is unable to recover from this situation, as she cannot log in to text mode and remove files with 'rm' command. This situation occurs eventually in case you have a small hard disk (e.g., in a laptop) and you update your packages regularly (without running 'apt-get clean') and/or some of your daemons freak out and write a log file which fills the HD.

GDM seems to have a similiar bug (Bug #35217).
