686 Kernel fails with ACPI enabled

Bug Description

686 kernel fails to boot with ACPI enabled (default). When "acpi=off" is added to Grub, kernel boots normally (aside from no ACPI functions). 386 kernel works fine with or without ACPI. When "quiet" option is removed from Grub, last line of text displayed is "ACPI: Subsystem revision 20051216". As soon as that line is displayed the system reboots. This bug has existed for the past few kernel releases, though I'm not certain of which. My system is a Dell XPS, 3 GHz Pentium 4. On my laptop Edgy (knot 3) only boots with the option acpi=off, it's the same bug as in Dapper with a 686 kernel. A 386 kernel works perfect, including acpi (fans, temperature, battery, etc.).

With noapic nolapic or with no options the kernel just stops after saying:

...
[17179570.332000] Freeing initrd memory: 7355k freed
[17179570.332000] ACPI: Looking DSDT ... not found!
[17179570.336000] ACPI: setting ELCR to 0800 (from 0020)
[17179570.356000] CPU0: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.60GHz stepping 07

my system is a Medion MD 6200 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/MedionMD6200

In Edgy, we no longer have a specific 686 kernel. If the bug reappears, please respond to this report.

Thanks.

For me, it's edgy's linux-general kernel that's giving a crash, but I had the bug too with the dapper 686 kernel since some version.
