Gnomes's volume control can't control all programs

Bug Description

In order to have a good sound quality when I listen to music, I have to put the volume very low in the software and put it very high on my speakers.

I turn down the volume on gnome's volume controller, then I have to turn the volume down on rhythmbox because it's not affected by gnomes volume control.

Even then, when someone messages's me on gaim, the sound is extremely loud. Even if gnome's volume controller is set to mute.

I tried changing the sound server used by gnome but the only one that can actually play a sound is ESD.

A good solution (I think) would be to have the volume control managing all sound servers. Maybe it's harder to do than it seems since nobody did it already but it would be great if all applications volumes cound be controlled from the same place.
