Bug Description

Binary package hint: fglrx

After fglrx upgrade to 2:8.721-0ubuntu7 and restarting X couldn't start with fglrx driver.

1)
Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
Release: 10.04

2)
fglrx:
  Zainstalowana: 2:8.721-0ubuntu7
  Kandydująca: 2:8.721-0ubuntu7
  Tabela wersji:
 *** 2:8.721-0ubuntu7 0
        500 http://pl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/restricted Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) I expected normal start of X.org with fglrx driver
4) X couldn't start, I've got a message containing:
(EE) Unable to initialize PCS database
(EE) Missing PCS defaults file /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default
(EE) No devices detected.

The /etc/ati folder lacks amdpcsdb.default, control, signature files,
solved by copying older version
cd /etc/ati
sudo cp amdpcsdb.default.dpkg-bak amdpcsdb.default
sudo cp control.dpkg-bak control
sudo cp signature.dpkg-bak signature

The upgrade to 2:8.721-0ubuntu7 was normal, it wasn't interrupted etc.

This is a bit weird as the package contains those files (as is supposed to install them):

:~$ dpkg -L fglrx | grep /etc/ati
/etc/ati
/etc/ati/signature
/etc/ati/atiogl.xml
/etc/ati/logo.xbm.example
/etc/ati/logo_mask.xbm.example
/etc/ati/control
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default
/etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh

Please follow these steps:

1) type the following command:
sudo apt-get --purge remove fglrx

and attach the output of the following command:
ls -l /etc/ati

2) type the following command:
sudo apt-get install fglrx

and attach the output of the following command:
ls -l /etc/ati

After reinstalling via apt-get everything is ok. My problem occured only once, just after automatic upgrade.
I attach the ls outputs of /etc/ati you asked for.

Correct, it happened with upgrade of fglrx on the 01/04. Complete remove via synaptic, reboot + reinstall fixed it.

Hesitant to mess with it now that all is fine, especially during the week and this is my work and primary machine. Do the outputs provided by bodwick provide you with enough? If not I'll do this on the weekend and post the results.

Changed in fglrx-installer (Ubuntu):
status: New → Triaged
importance: Undecided → Medium

Can you also attach the following files, please?

This bug is said to be a duplicate of bug #494699 which is supposed to be fixed, but my (this) bug still persists.
I've upgraded fglrx to 2:8.721-0ubuntu10 just today and had the same problem once again.

@bodwick, have you run the updates that came in today for fglrx? I'm hesitant to apply them till this evening in-case the same issue occurs... busy working. Will try them this evening.

@Brendan_P Yes I have, today's updates (to fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu1) work fine, no problems for me.
