Bug Description

With automake 1.10.3 on a Gentoo system, the ./autogen.sh script of the 1.2.1 release fails with the following message:

$ ./autogen.sh
Running aclocal... failed
Running aclocal again with errors unmasked:
am-wrapper: /usr/bin/aclocal-1.7 is missing or not executable.
            Please try emerging the correct version of automake.

The ./autogen.sh forces the version of automake it wants with the WANT_AUTOMAKE environment variable. Automake 1.7 is not required at all, so the statement could be removed.
