Today'S ISO image does not boot

it say: "BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [event 0:6]"

The computer is a first generation Pentium 4 1.6 ghz and should be supported by Linux. All other version of Ubuntu (since 4.10) work without issues on this computer so this is definitely a regression. The motherboard is a P4 something from asus.

I am not going to add additional informations as I will not have the computer close to me anymore.

Ok talking to the reporter on IRC this is the i386 live CD as at 07-apr-2010.

As we see ureadahead-other running we have at least got out of the kernel into userspace before the issue appeared. The BUG: lines should include a stack trace and that trace would give us some clue as to the source of the soft-lockup. You may be able to boot the machine to single user (using single on the kernel command line) and be able to see the whole trace with the dmesg command. Getting a photo or similar of that and attaching it to the bug would be helpful. Right now its impossible to know what the cause is.

After some work on IRC, I can confirm that init=/bin/bash in syslinux does boot to grub, but once

exec init

is executed, it freeze instantanly, with the trace found above. DMesg looked clean before the freez. It look like sreadahead just fail badly.

Hi Elv13,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 557351

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Kyty,

can you please tell more about complete and incomplete ISO download. I downloaded twice from http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download. Both files have a size of 699.4 MB. I burn iso file to a disc using Brasero Disc Burner, no error was reported.

When I tried out the live CDs, they friezed on a screen as shown in your "kyty wrote on 2010-05-20:". While Ubuntu 9.04 got something like checksum, I did not find any for 10.04.

I am using Notebook Compaq Presario A900. By the way, my computer is running Ubuntu 10.04 , dual boot Windows XP, upgraded online from Ubuntu 9.10 without problem.

Somebody please advise. Thanks

Toni,

I twice downloaded the ISO via HTTP. Both times were incomplete -- the connection was lost and files ended up less than 699 MB.

Then I used torrent and it worked. http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/alternative-download
