"Check disc for defects" (run on a different computer than the test system) reports no errors.

I booted from a CD, chose English, and selected "Try Kubuntu without installing". After ~10 seconds the screen flashed on and off repeatedly, then stayed in the black-but-powered-on state. Eventually I heard the KDE start-up sound. The screen did not light up when I tried moving the cursor or pressing keys. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and Ctrl-Alt-F7 did not switch to other TTYs or sessions.

The test computer is an HP Elitebook 8440p model WH255UT#ABA. Chipset: Mobile Intel QM57 Express, graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD.

Note especially that this computer _does_ boot up successfully with a year-old Xubuntu 9.10 Live CD.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve Ubuntu.

If you boot without the 'splash' option, do you get the same results?

What about booting with 'nomodeset'?

I tried with no 'splash' option, with 'splash' but without 'nomodeset', and with 'splash' and with 'nomodeset'. In all three cases I got the same result: screen flashing on and off, and eventually the start-up sound.

If I blind-type the right keys to get the computer to shut down, and let it restart into Windows 7, the screen remains black after Windows starts up. I have to hibernate and wake the computer for the display to light up.

I also get the black screen if I use the Live CD's "check disk" option.

The same thing happened to my new Panasonic CF-R9 with QM 57 chipset.
Following images have been confirmed to reproduce the symptom (everything but display works).
- ubuntustudio-9.10-alternate-i386.iso
- ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso

Now I'm trying with ubuntustudio-10.04-beta2-alternate-i386.iso because I want a pre-compiled real time kernel.

I have tried a persistent live USB key made from the lucid-desktop-amd64.iso of 20100416 (note: not i386), md5sum 3457aff4863972bbb38806e68cd30a77, which I think will be the beta3 release.

Results for "Try kubuntu without installing":
* with no options changed
  - screen goes black
  - KDE start-up sound plays
  - Ctrl-Alt-Fn produces no visible results.
  - blind-typing Ctrl-Alt-Del Down-arrow CR CR etc shuts down the computer

* with "splash" removed from the boot options
  - as above

* with "splash" present in the boot options and "nomodeset" selected in the F6 menu
  - big ugly boot animation. It looks like the resolution is 640x480 8-bit.
  - screen goes black, then fades in dim bands of odd colors.
  - KDE start-up sound does _not_ play.
  - Ctrl-Alt-Fn does nothing.
  - Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing.

* with "splash" removed and "nomodeset" selected
  - no boot animation.
  - screen shows many text messages, starting with "stdin: error 0" and "can't open /dev/sr0", each repeated a few times.
  - screen goes black, then fades in dim bands of odd colors.
  - KDE start-up sound does _not_ play.
  - Ctrl-Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-Del do nothing.

I get the same problem with Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 LiveCD. When just starting the LiveCD, after the boot screen the screen goes black. The CD continues to load stuff and then the startup sound plays. Then nothing happens. When pressing the shutdown key of the laptop the LiveCD begins to spin. When pressing Enter, the LiveCD is ejected, when pressing enter again, the laptop shuts down.

Tried also:
- to remove the 'quiet splash --' options, but got the same results;
- to remove the 'quiet splash --' options and added 'vga=771' option, but got the same results;
- to remove the 'quiet splash --' options and added 'nomodeset', this worked and I got to the desktop at 800x600.

Looks like the graphics driver of the LiveCD is not working with the nvidia quadro nvs 3100m card or something...

If you need more information, let me know.

Then I can install Ubuntu but on boot into the installed system still shows a black screen, except of course when I add 'nomodeset' to the command line in Grub.

Then I installed the new official driver from the Nvidia website (version 195.36.24 Certified released 28-04-2010) and installed that driver. Now when I boot normally, the screen goes black, but when I boot with 'nomodeset' the Nvidia driver loads and works pretty good (no unstable stuff in the few ours I used it).

Off topic: these new drivers support the NVS 3100m card. (It does not mention this on the website, but it does in the docs).

Will this driver appear in the official repositories?

Two ways:

1. Press 'e' in the grub menu. You can then edit the command line of the highlighted menu entry. Add 'nomodeset' to that command line.

2. If you want to make it permanently: you have to edit the grub configuration files. For more information see:

Any word on if the patch listed in comments #69 and #70 will work on a Lucid kernel?

Here is how installed Lucid on the elitebook 8440p (with Intel). It is a poor workaround, but at least it works:

1) install using the Alternate Installer CD, make sure to set the "nomodeset nosplash" kernel options
2) after the installation is finished, choose "rescue mode" from the grub menu (it may be necessary to pass along the nomodeset nosplash options again?)
3) when rescue mode asks you what to do, choose "Fail-safe X"
4) copy the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
5) change GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nosplash nomodeset" in /etc/default/grub
6) run update-grub

You know have a working system, albeit using the VESA Xorg driver. This is obviously suboptimal, but it's better than nothing.
