Compiz has been removed from Ubuntu lucid today, after update. If you want to reinstall compiz, Ubuntu desktop and metacity is required to be removed.

My title bar is missing after reboot. I have to use metacity --replace to manually bring it back every time.

Same here.

Changed /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager in gconf-editor to metacity to auto start metacity.
But it's not really usable as metacity crashes as soon as i right click on the title bar, but that's probably a metacity bug.

compiz is still rebuilding. Wait for a few hour before it being published on your archives.

(/!\ never do partial upgrade on a development distribution! The warning is here for something.)
If you removed compiz, once the package is available, install compiz and compiz-gnome.

@Didier Roche

True, and I'm not complaining (as running a beta carries a certain risk).
But your fix does not work as compiz and compiz-gnome remove Metacity and leave me with a composited desktop without buttons on the window title bars...

@Guy: Didier does not proposed any fix. He just said that an update of compiz-gnome will appear in a couple of hours to fix the problem with metacity. As far as a know, this update is not still here.

However

apt-get update
apt-get install compiz-gnome

Fixed it.

I had the same issue - an update to metacity this morning (~8am BST) removed compiz. I didn't realise this so lost compiz when I next rebooted. However, I've managed to reinstall them now and compiz is back working.

That said, should updates to metacity actually force the removal of compiz packages? Perhaps it would be nicer to say you can't install the metacity update if it isn't compatible with compiz etc etc?

my last update here, on my computer the update restored compiz-gnome but not compiz itself, it works but gnome-window-decorator was gone
I did Installed the following packages by using synapric:
compiz (1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15)
compiz-gnome (1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15)
will see if it works

@James Gregory:
No, that's totally integrated with way apt dist-upgrade works.
In a nutshell, the new version of metacity broke the old compiz one. And compiz was rebuilt to support the new metacity version. Unfortunately, this one get low priority on rebuild in the builders, and so, metacity has been available before compiz.

If I wouldn't push the break: tag, you would have a strange compiz working with metacity whith other bugs… The tag was here to reflect the transition.

apt-get upgrade will do nothing harmful in this case (as it won't upgrade the new metacity as it will remove the old compiz)
apt-get dist-upgrade tells "do wathever you want, even if it includes removing package to get the latest version of crack"

update-manager does an apt-distupgrade on "not released yet" distro to handle transition of libs and so on. People running this are expected to read message when a "partial upgrade" is available and see the summary (which told "I will remove your compiz, be careful :)").

of course, update-manager then do a classical apt-get update on stable ubuntu version to avoid such things.

In any way, all was written, read the message that are bumped to you (and again, never do "partial upgrade" on an unstable version if you don't know the cause). Hope that this explanation is enough :)

To cut it short:
If you did the dist-upgrade or "Partial Upgrade" then compiz and compiz-gnome would have been removed. Reinstall these and it will work fine.

Still having the issue on reboot from earlier updates (round noon).

** No titlebars and window border whatsoever **
** Latest opened window stays on top **

Workaround: I had to go to System>Preferences ... Desktop Effects tab and try and activate compiz to get metacity working again (and thus getting an usable desktop).

Ehm, I'm not sure if this is the right bug but I experience the same problem, installed compiz-gnome and now it almost works. It's only that when compiz is enabled there is only one window-decorator-theme. I don't really now which one it is but is has vey big icons, similar to "metabox", changing theme in "Appearance preferences" has no effect.

Before installing compiz-gnome I got this when trying to start compiz: "Couldn't find a perfect decorator match; trying all decorators".

Any help highly appreciated.

After a restart from a partial upgrade from Karmic to Lucid, neither compiz nor metacity are started on login - so no decorations or window manager.

metacity --replace would work, but can't always get focus into gnome-Terminal, so easiest thing is to go to Appearance > visual effects and switch between metacity and compiz. But visual effects do not remain on when logging in again.

Have purged and reinstalled compiz, compiz-gnome and lots of metacity and gdm packages, but problem persists.

Cedders (cedric-gn) wrote :

After reinstalling most of the system, I tried logging in in GNOME safe mode, and metacity was running correctly. Big clue that it was something to do with the GNOME session, and I remembered I'd stored various startup applications.

So if starting metacity on the command line as above and then going to System > Preferences > Startup Applications > Options tab > click on "Remember Currently-running Application" and tick "automatically remember" seemed to work.

So this isn't apparently related to the compiz-gnome package, but to the upgrade process and its effect on the saved session. Might be the same as bug 563171 and/or bug 560065 which don't mention compiz-gnome.

Thanks for the info! I had the same issue after upgrading to Lucid today. This fixed it for me:

- Move ~/.compiz to Desktop
- Move ~/.config/gnome-session to Desktop
- Reinstall compiz, compiz-gnome and metacity via Synaptic
- Close all windows and applications
- System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Options -> "Remember currently running applications"
- Log out and back in

Hope it helps someone!
