Bug Description

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

At least in Xubuntu 9.04 they all worked pretty well. But now in Lucid there is this pulseaudio and I can't set the other outputs anymore; they are muted.

It's because pulse currently doesn't handle the additional mixer elements.

Is this fixed in Lucid?

This is not fixed even in Maverick (10.10). Only the green output works, not the black one, neither coaxial digital output (S/PDIF). I tried to adjust them in alsamixer. I couldn't find a way to adjust or set it in Ubuntu's sound preferences either.

Workaround: uninstall pulseaudio, and reboot. Then black output and coaxial digital output are controlled by Wave Surround track in alsamixer.

Correction to #5: black output volume is adjusted by Wave Surround track and coaxial digital output volume (and green output volume) are adjusted by Wave track. Additionally Master and PCM tracks adjust the volume of green output.

I think there was some confusion in #6; but now testing in 11.04...

All the outputs works with pulseaudio in Xubuntu 11.04, but requires some configuration:

Optional step (AFAIK) that affects to orders of profiles in pavucontrol, at least:
Add line
default-sample-channels=4
in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and restart pulseaudio.

Mandatory steps:
start pavucontrol,
click Configuration tab,
Choose Analog Surround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input. (or similar)

Then both analog line outs work and additionally digital output works. Setting volume of front output device very high in pavucontrol (or setting volume high in indicator-sound or setting PCM high in alsamixer) gave some cracking when playing, so better leave it to "Base" setting, I think. Master track in alsa mixer is handy for setting front volume independent of rear volume and digital output, though muting it mutes all outputs.

Though, unmuting by unmuting Master in alsamixer does not work, if muting was made by a pulseaudio volume control or gnome-volume-control was running, when unmuting by alsamixer.
