Add a map "ping location" to communicate a map position to other players

Bug Description

It would be helpful for referencing locations in multiplayer games
if the coordinates of the map could be displayed (on request) inside the game.
Maybe CTRL+Mouseover or some such thing.

This is again a feature request rather than a bug report, but I can't find
any other place to file this on launchpad

I never had reason for this. Did you really ever have the problem where east, north, south and west was not enough? If so, a Map Ping should maybe be included.. or a permanent marker for each player that he can set and move as he wishes.

Oh well, there is always a way to talk (write) somebody to an exact location - sure.
I admit it's a luxury feature. I thought, as this already exists inside the editor (though permanently, which I wouldn't like in the game)
it might be easy to do.
A permanent marker would be seen by anybody participating in the game, and so less versatile.
We like to play 2 on 2 coalitions with 2 different teamspeak session, and I would primarily want the feature
to inform my partner about what I plan to do next.
But a decent way to reference a location would help for
other things, too - like bugs or replays etc.

seems like you are pro. 2v2 and teamspeak ;). About time for a widelands tournament I guess.

Nah, not really ... the teamspeak server is not my work - I'm merely allowed to facilities
my son and his crowd use - but they're more into other games...
Thanks for the confirmation :)

Note that debug builds show x and y coordinates in the upper left corner along with some other information.

However, if the goal is to notify some part of the map, I wonder if this could be marked as a duplicate of bug 835564?

Based on the title change for this bug report, I wonder if it might be better to mark this as a duplicate of bug 835564, which already contains some ideas and discussions on how to implement this.

Agreed. I think coordinates really get the player out of the immersion of the game, we should avoid communicating them if possible.
