Bug Description

I can't open jpg files; i got this message (transated by myself from spanish):

"Cannot open blablabla.jpg

The file name «blablabla.jpg» indicates that file is «jpg document». File content indicates that is «JPEG Image». If you open the file, it can represent a system security risk."

I've found in the web this problem with other file types, by example wmv-asf; samba folders, instalation files, etc...

As someone told: "is the most anti-userfriendly that I've seen in my life. In Linux never a file was identified by its name-extension, but by means of 'file'."

Some user suggested to fix it with "cat /etc/mime.types"...

Thank you for your bug report. Unfortunately I'm having trouble reproducing it. Please could you describe the exact steps you took to produce the bug so that we can hunt down the bug more effectively. Also, which version of Ubuntu are you using? Thanks.

To begin: This bug seems to be spontaneous; I mean: some people have this bug when try to open a .wmv, with contents identified as "asf", or with a file without extension identified as some file type, or some other filetypes.
I mean that maybe you can open all your files without this problem; then maybe you'll never can reproduce this bug... a little part of the users have this problem...

Is important too, to say that people has told me (x-chat) that they solve the problem changing the extension, but I won't change the extension of the lot of jpg that I get (I'm designer!)
and finally this is a problem, then must be fixed.

Then, I'll attach some screenshots to show you the problem :)

1.png= these are jpg files
2.png= I've clicked the first image and moved to the other 3 with keyboard arrows, then automatically get preview
3.png= can't open the first file
4.png= These are other images, I don't know why some of these are normally previewed, excepting one (11.jpg)
5.png= I touch (click) the image, and get preview
6.png= Can't open the file, (even if i try with the others)

If you want, you can find me sometimes in x-chat (freenode>ubuntu-es)
Thanks :)

Sorry. The .deb was a damaged file in this case then the message was true.
You can find similar cases in the web googling "ca't open file" or similars

Voila! I 've changed the languaje of my ubuntu, to see the bug in english, then googled:

"cannot open" "the contents of the file indicate"
(If you search this in google, you got so much sites with this bug)

I found too that this bug was reported (as I thought and said before) because of it's multiple filetypes it can be founded.

The bugs reported are: #19101; #34077

Here are some links with the big in english, with another filetypes:

that is not a bug, the message is clear enough on why the filename has to match the type

Thus _is_ a bug. Surely, opening files with file type mismatch between extension and file content could be considered good security by some, and I'm not even sure I disagree :), but where's the mismatch between .jpg as extension and 'JPEG Image' as the content file type?

the jpg case is a bug, if it happens to you feel free to open a bug with an example of file triggering that bug

You mean that this is a different matter/bug? I don't think it.
About send a file triggering it, every jpg file trigger it, so, there's no
reason to send one.

Maybe the detection window must have an 'ignore this fyletipe forever' or
anythig different... im' going sick about that, and I want to help to fix
this problem, but in this moment I don't know how. If you need from me to
send any system or configuration file that could give us to a solution, jus
tell me.

open a bug on shared-mime-info with an example of file you can't open, then we can have a look on why it's not working correctly

Bug confirmed on Ubuntu 7.10, gnome 2.20.1. Extremely annoying. Applies to .jpg, not .JPG, nor when renamed back to .jpg! Having previously "opened with" a .jpg (without renaming) makes no difference. The error message is then produced again. Problem experience with all imported pictures, camera as well as mobil phone.
