Bug Description

When inserting a cd or dvd, they don't appear on the desktop, and the action selection windows doesn't show up.
It only fails with optical medias, "media storage" based memories are working correctly.
I have been confirmed kde 3.5.4 on dapper doesn't have this problem.
That can also be a hal or dbus issue, but since I'm unsure what causes this, kdebase is probably the better place to report.

It has probably to be considered critical bug since it make a simple media usage of the computer simply impossible.

Note : this isn't a permission issue since I can play the dvd with kaffeine which uses /dev/dvd device without any problem.

Seems to be an IDE CD-ROM:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2002-01-01 01:01 /dev/cdrom -> hdd

But the Laptop is SATA-based (that is, the harddisk is /dev/sda).

The problem is partially resolved, since the icon now appears on the desktop.
The second part of the process (dialog to choose action) still doesn't appear.
That's probably due to _Sime patches to the media:/ ioslave.
