I get this error dialog:

Error
Internal error
failed to initialize HAL!

I did not get this error before and I don't know what might have changed.

I do not get this error anymore, but I got it more than in one login. Mystical HAL problem.

I got the error again when I started computer today. The error does not happen after every boot. For what it is worth, I have executed the script given in
http://xubuntu.wordpress.com/2006/09/04/howto-speed-up-shutdownreboot/
(I am planning to upgrade to Edgy.)

I see this error everytime I login in ubuntu 6.10 before the complete start of boot service.
If I wait 30 seconds (and wait for the hard disk to stop reading) and then login in system this error doesn't appear

Xubuntu 6.06.1 has the same effect. The OS shouldn't let you login before it is ready! BTW, what is HAL? My system seems to work even if I get the error..

The "failed to initialize HAL" error actually comes from update-notifier (see bug #81670).
