Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3. Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4. At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5. Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

Thanks.
We need you to answer some additional questions to try to find the problem.

Does the screen goes blank after the splash screen?

Please add as separate attachments the following files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/gdm

If you can't login on that machine to get the files, perhaps you could log in remotely with ssh or use a Live CD to access the hard drive and get the files.

Thanks.

Hum, ok. So you can boot without issues with usplash disabled.
Then it's a problem in plymouth and not in xorg.

Please open a terminal and execute the following command:
apport-collect 595352

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → plymouth (Ubuntu)
