Bug Description

Installation of 10.04 fails in VirtualBox if disk is unpartitioned. The result is that no partitions are created at all which causes grub-install to fail.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Create a virtual machine in virtualbox
2) Attach ubuntu-10.04-desktop-amd64.iso to CD
3) Boot virtual machine
4) Choose to install
5) Every configuration step proceeds without any errors but at the very last part of installation grub-install fails since there are no partitions on disk
6) Choose proceed without running grub-install does not work either since there are no partitions there is nothing saved to the disk.

What version of virtualbox-ose are you using?

What is your host OS?

It is not virtualbox-ose but the Sun (Oracle) version.
I have seen this in 2.4, 2.6 and 2.8.

In 2.8 the situation is somewhat different in that way that the system
is not able to boot.

Ubuntu 9.10

The same applies to 10.04 and Debian Unstable

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs.
