Stupid idea IMHO.

How does you think the "Run" command will work before the installation happens? And if you installed already - why you cannot use the main menu to start the app?

Creating shortcuts on desktop - why you should do it from the SoftCerter? In KDE yo can do it in menu within the DE. If GNOME not support it - ask the GNOME developers to extend the GNOME functionality.

Also...
I have a better idea :) -
Lets add the messenger, WEB-browsing, logs reviewing, system configuration, documents editing... in the Software Center. If it is called Software Center it should perform any action the user want, shouldn't it?. Tell me why? :)

Not display or disable Run button in this case.

If you already install application maybe use /usr/bin/app or terminal emulator? Your question is strange like this, you know.

I also ask Software Center developers about drag'n'drop feature for application shortucts. If developers accept this feature for next version and can't implement this because of deficiencies of Gnome - they ask Gnome developers about workaround, not I.

Here is no good place for joke.

A special widget displaying shortcuts of the recently installing applications would do.

No, I see no reason to duplicate the functionality that is already provided by the suitable and standard way.

sure? ;)

I consider this idea is a joke - I've just expanded _do_everything_with_software to the detailed list of possible functions that user may want.

The reason is a logic. Software Center must allow to launch installed applications because it's Software Center.

You come to launchpad.net for write stupid joke and messages with smiles?

first, this is not a mailing list. second. are you suggesting that clicking on any installed app will show a run button? well novice people like me will think software center is the place to start apps. though I read somewhere that the newly installed apps might give you the option to start them(I think I read it somewhere). so as far as the run button is concerned, its no where in the software center design. for more information refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter

Anyway - inform user about way to run app, add run button, add widget with list of installed apps, or both - you see, this problem need solution! I propose this solution. grisha propose another solution. But solution of this problem is necessary!

We won't add a "run" button, but we will make it possible to
drag-and-drop the app icon onto the Launcher. So, if you'd like to
rephrase the bug it can stay open, alternatively, please mark it invalid.

Hi,

I dont mean to outsource Ubuntu design to MS, but have people seen the
leaked slides for an MS AppStore?
http://msftkitchen.com/2010/06/windows-8-plans-leaked-numerous-details-revealed.html

This particular slide:
http://msftkitchen.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Windows-8-Windows-Store-06.png
indicates that at MS, Install = Run. I tend to agree in so far as
when a user installs an app they may expect it to launch once
installed? Though, when installing multiple apps this would not be
desirable. Or at least I install an app only to immediately launch
it, so it makes sense if s-c could streamline this scenario to
minimise clicks and pointing etc.

Maybe some user testing needs to be conducted, trialling some UI
approaches to this scenario? In Windows its common for installers to
include a checkbox so the user can indicate if they would like an app
to launch when installation has completed. This to me seems a good
compromise.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a duplicate of bug 420517, so it is being marked as such. Please look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for the bug. Additionally, any further discussion regarding the bug should occur in the other report. Please continue to report any other bugs you may find.

I'm duping this due to the point 3:
This has been discussed several times, and mpt has specked a where is it section: <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#where-is-it>
The option to *not* run application from SC is intentional. Users were not able to recall later where the application was installed and where they can run it from later.

Adding a run option does not help , but there is a plan for a where-is-it instead.
