Bug Description

Binary package hint: metacity

In Gconf, when I tick /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager, nothing happens, according to the gnome 2.16 release notes [1], metacity should be compiled with the --enable-compositor special option to get 3D effects.

Yet, for simple users as me, compiling it is painful.

Somehow it has to be far more simple, maybe with another metacity package, compiled with the special option and called metacity-comositing by instance, in conflict with the normal metacity 2D package, that the end user could choose in Synaptic.

metacity needs a newer libcm and that library would require to be promoted to main for that. Note that spiftacity package from universe is what you describe, an another package built with the compositor

The latest 2.17.5 release still lacks libcm/compositor support. The libcm is universe is still stuck at an old pre-0.1 release. Spiftacity is stuck at an old 2.13 release.

Can we get this updated, please? The compositor in Metacity is supposed to be getting pretty stable, and it's disabled entirely if the GConf key isn't set, so...

libcm 0.1.1 has already been uploaded to feisty and we will likely build metacity with it next if it works fine

Has this happened yet? I'm curious to see ..

And if so, how do I enable it. Currently, setting the metacity gconf key when having libcm installed doesn't seem to do the trick!

No, the code doesn't work correctly and libcm can change

Metacity has a new xcompmgr-based composite manager, this is enabled and works in Hardy. Marking as fixed.
