Bug Description

Running Ubuntu-One on Intrepid and have now had several instances of the latest file versions on my laptop being overwritten by the older ones from the Ubuntu-One server. I'm only synchronising the Documents folder on my home folder. I've attached the log. Incredibly irritating as I've now lost a day of work on 2 different occasions.

barra,
Sorry ubuntu One is not working as expected. It definitely should not be overwriting files with older versions. What type of files are they .tar .pdf .txt?

Could you please make the following change to your configuration file. This will increase the logging level in case this happens again additional information can be collected. Please run the following command in a Terminal (Applications .>Accessories >Terminal) to open the file.

gedit ~/.config/ubuntuone/logging.conf

Then add the following two lines to the file:

[logging]
level = DEBUG

u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c

Can you also confirm, you are running Ubuntu One on version 8.10?
thank you,

.docx, .odt and .tex are the files that I noticed getting overwritten. Using latest version of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS.

looking at my instructions for turning on more verbose logging they seem a little confusing.
These are the two lines you add to ~/.config/ubuntuone/logging.conf

[logging]
level = DEBUG

this is the command to restart U1 so the changes take effect.

u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c

Just wanted to make sure that was clear.
I will forward your bug on to the appropriate people.

thank you,

that shouldn't happen, ever.
What *could* happen in certain circumstances is that the local
syncdaemon thinks (either correctly or in error) that the server
has a new version and at the same time that it has local
un-synchronized changes. In such a situation, the local file will be
renamed by adding .u1conflict to the filename. Could you confirm
whether you have .u1conflict files?

Hi John,

That is correct. I seem to have glanced over them before. There are
.u1conflict files which seem to be up to date with what was done before it
was overwritten.

Barra

I have this problem as well. It happens often with text files that I save often, such as code. Nothing is ever lost due to the .u1conflict files, but it's extremely annoying. I found a fairly reliable way to reproduce.
- Create a text file that will be synced via U1.
- Make lots of little edits, saving over and over.
- Restart U1 with: u1sdtool -q; u1sdtool -c
- a .conflict file is created but there should be no conflict. The original file is reverted to a previous state. I use geany as a text editor which alerts me that the file has been changed.

To reproduce I had to manually restart U1. But in practice this happens to me a few times a day. This is potentially very bad. Lets say I am working on code, save the file, exit my text editor, upload to svn or wherever. If I am unlucky U1 might replace the file without me noticing.

This bug is definitely affecting me, even with only one machine syncing. And the u1 client uploads each file half a dozen times for each save, for no reason. I never get u1conflict files. It just straight up replaces the files. Very annoying.
