Bug Description

Binary package hint: plasma-netbook (only the Knowledge base widget)

On a fresh Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick installation, when you log in to KDE (using the plasma netbook workspace), you are presented with a password dialog that says:

You need to supply a username and password to access this site.

Site: your valid user account or api key at api.opendesktop.org
Username:
Password:

As a user, you don't know what your account or api key is, or even what api.opendesktop.org is, or why KDE is asking for an account immediately after login.

TEST CASES

1. Fresh installation of Kubuntu10.10 with every update available updated (as for 13/01/2011) on an Asus eee 1001px: By default Kubuntu starts plasma-netbook on this machine, so, it always asks for the opendesktop account every time you log in to KDE. If you remove the Knowledge base widget, the problem disappears.

2. Fresh installation of Kubuntu 10.10 with every update available updated (as for 13/01/2011) on a Desktop PC: By default Kubuntu starts plasma-desktop so, no problem here, but if you switch to the netbook workspace you get asked to supply an opendesktop account. If you remove the Knowledge base widget, the problem disappears

ISO TESTED

Standard Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick

WORKAROUNDS

Apparently this issue is related to the "Knowledge Base" Widget, so, removing this Widget solves the problem (or you can get a valid opendesktop account).

In order to Remove the "Knowledge Base" widget you must go to Page One and close the Knowledge Base Widget by clicking on the cross at the upper right corner of the widget (it appears when you hover the mouse over it).

Jonathan: Thanks for switching that. I searched LP for various combinations of Plasma but couldn't find an actual package that seemed right. So thanks for pointing this in the right direction.

Experienced this error in the release version of Kubuntu Maverick on a netbook. This was an in-place upgrade of Lucid and the message appeared after login once the post-upgrade reboot had completed. I hit Cancel to get rid of the message.

Later, I suspended and resumed the netbook, and the message re-appeared. I hit Cancel again and rebooted. The message didn't appear this time. Did another suspend/resume and no sign of the message.

For info, the authorisation message is still appearing, however due to having other apps loading first it isn't obvious unless you Alt-Tab.

I've updated the entire description since this was a bug reported when Kubuntu Maverick was on alpha-3 and I've tested it on a fresh install with an standard Kubuntu 10.10 disk with every update available till today. So, users are still experimenting this with a default Kubuntu 10.10 installation (only when using the netbook workspace).

This is a function of the widget, not the workspace.

This doesn't just occur after the first reboot. Changing system settings sometimes shows the same login screen. I guess it's trying to save the settings in the wrong place!
