Bug Description

This new type touchpad has a left click in the lower left corner and right click in the lower right. These worked on lucid, but on maverick, neither work.

Even though the left /right click worked on lucid, there was another problem on lucid which occurred when attemption to select text. After pressing and activating the left click, any touch to the pad (to start selecting text) immediately would cause the mouse to jump off the nearest corner of the screen. Thus text selection is impossible in lucid.

I have no way to test this in maverick, since the click capability is missing.

On both lucid and maverick, tapping the pad will result in a left click, and bottom edge horizontal scrolling and right edge vertical scrolling works.

To right-click or middle-click, you do not depress the touchpad. Instead, you tap the lower-right corner to right-click and tap the upper-right corner to middle-click. This is less than ideal, but it works.

Hi pauls,

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Jeremy,

OK, I'm using the Sep 8 2010 daily kernel build and the problem still exists.

paul :~$ uname -a
Linux localpc2 2.6.36-999-generic #201009080908 SMP Wed Sep 8 09:10:27 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

So, it seems to be a regression upstream.

jyio, I know what you mean about tapping to get the disired effect, but I cannot select text while tapping. To select text I need to be able to hold that missing button.

Bad news.
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18122 states that this touchpad is not supported upstream yet (legal issues). So, the patches that were provided in lucid need to be applied again in maverick.

I don't know if some of the patches were part of xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, so have filed a new bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/634017

Vbitz, I tried your suggestion and now my touchpad synaptics characteristics are disabled. No horiz or vert scrolling or other synaptics features, so it's not a good fix here.
